These are odd little stories. Sister Bodie walks out of church, rises into the air. Her ashes fall to the walk. Parishoners gather. Gasp. Sister Bodie reappears. Goes home. A couple are reading. He goes up to look at his wife's jewels. Returns to chair. She gets up to check on her jewels. Wondered if someone might have been disturbing them. They continue reading. On and on.
Jim Tate has been gone for a few years but he is missed. This collection although it has some sad aspects, approaches the reality of death as an experience the poet shares with readers. Mere mortals (even ones with amazing humor) have to deal with the absurdity of death. This guy has a variety of characters who are like puppets performing in a Bergman film going through some terrifying experiences. Rodents, bunnies, a devil, and lots of other odd visitors come around and do some magical things. Tate is like a reporter telling us what it's like to be dying.
It's an incredible final collection. Death is clearly on Tate's mind in all of these poems, and I think they give you a devastating glimpse into a dying man's mind in a way only fictional poetry can. These poems are some of Tate's most accessible, with less of the absurd imagery found in many of his previous works. Yet his trademark meandering narratives and ability to capture profound emotional truths in everyday capers abound throughout. A true talent, whose unique voice will be missed.
